State figures for assisted living are published state averages. Other care types by state are modeled from the state's assisted living level using a documented method — see Sources & method.

How the calculator works

The model starts from a national average for the care type you pick. For assisted living, memory care, and nursing homes those are published monthly figures. For in-home care the monthly cost is the hourly rate times the hours you enter. Selecting a state applies that state's assisted living cost level to the national figure.

The runway projection is the simple version that matters most: your savings divided by the monthly gap between the cost of care and the income you can put toward it. It is deliberately conservative — it does not assume investment returns or rising care prices, and care costs have been rising about 5% a year.

It is a planning tool, not a quote. Use it to know whether a number you are quoted is normal, and to see roughly how many years a given amount of savings buys.
